Hotel Recommendations - France

The old town of Nice, also called “Vieux Nice” (Old Nice), lies just below a large granite hill. The famous "Promenade des Anglais," also known as "Walkway of the English," is a famous promenade along the Mediterranean coast. It was built in the late 18th century when the English aristocracy took to spending the winters in Nice.

The old town has narrow winding streets and is steps from the beach. It is famous for its daily open-air flower market. On Mondays, the flower market becomes a flea market with many vendors selling antiques.

There are many hotels in this historical area and near the beach. I've also included a few in newer areas of Nice which offer lively neighborhoods, great restaurants, farmers markets, and lots of shops. I am not affiliated with any of these hotels. Just my recommendations!

Splendid Hôtel & Spa - Nice

✩✩✩✩

This hotel is not close to the water and is just outside the “old town” in an area with modern buildings and lots of shops and restaurants but not as much charm. The best thing about The Splendid is the rooftop bar, rooftop swimming pool, and breakfast room, which is on the top floor with a beautiful view. The rooms are simple but clean. They have been renovating rooms for three years, so I imagine they might be all new…but not fancy. This hotel requires more walking to get to the beach, old town etc.

Hôtel La Pérouse - Nice

✩✩✩✩

Hotel La Pérouse is built into the cliffs along the sea with sea views and in the Vieux Nice area just several blocks from old Nice. The rooms are nice, and the bathrooms are large. Breakfast is not as nice as at the hotel above. There is also a restaurant. The best thing about this hotel is the sea view and location on the water. It’s also a block from old Nice.

Ask for a sea view!

Hôtel Negresco - Nice

✩✩✩✩✩

This iconic Nice hotel opened in 1913 for the elite and royalty of the day. It’s across the street from the beach with exclusive beach access. Pricy but iconic, and worth a splurge. If you don’t stay there, visit by telling the doorman you’re going to have a drink at the bar (at $20 plus for a simple cocktail but worth it) and then roam the property. From their website: “From Dalì to Grace Kelly, from the Beatles to Liz Taylor, the list of internationally known stars that have graced the Negresco is impressive.”

Hôtel Belles Rives - Cap d’Antibes

✩✩✩✩✩

Another splurge. This hotel is on the water in Juan-les-Pins - Cap d’Antibes. This hotel was home to F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald during their summers in Nice. It’s close to the wonderful port town of Antibes, which we will visit during our time together, but it’s worth an extra day or two’s visit. To stay here, you’ll need to rely on taxis as it’s not within walking distance to Nice or Antibes. It is beautiful and on the beach; you might not want to leave. This 5-star hotel is stunning with a gorgeous restaurant.

Hôtel Vendome - Nice

✩✩✩

The Hôtel Vendôme is an affordable 3-star hotel that has kept its original neoclassical architectural style, which combines the ideals of the sublime and the picturesque.

It is about 7 blocks or a 10 minute walk to the beach.

You can also stay in Valbonne…

…close to Simca and Julia’s. Valbonne is a charming town from the High Middle Ages with cobbled streets, nice shops, and restaurants. (It feels like a French version of Carmel by-the-Sea for my California friends.) We will be visiting Valbonne on one of our excursions to the best open air market around. There are a number of AirB&Bs here as well as hotels.

Valbonne is not near Nice, or the water. It’s close to where we’ll stay in the country. I often have people that stay here who don’t want to be in the city. Lots of lovely restaurants. Very restful. I’ve used VRBO in the past but here are a couple hotels I know:

Demeure d'Hotes Le Rocher ✩✩✩

Les Armoiries de Valbonne ✩✩✩
